What TPMS is
TPMS stands for tyre pressure monitoring system. On cars that have it, a small sensor and valve sit inside each wheel and send the pressure to your dashboard. When a sensor fails, is damaged during a tyre change, or a valve corrodes or leaks, the warning light can come on or stay on.
Why the light might be on
A pressure warning light doesn't always mean the sensor is faulty. The usual causes are:
- A tyre that has really lost pressure, for example from a slow puncture.
- A faulty or damaged sensor.
- A leaking or corroded valve.
Before you call
Please don't ignore a pressure warning. If it's safe to do so, check the tyres and top them up to the pressure in your handbook. If the light comes back, or a tyre won't hold air, call me. I cover cars, light vans, hybrids and EVs, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
What I do
I come to you, check the tyres and the valves, and replace the TPMS valve or sensor where that's what the car needs. If the problem is simply a tyre that needs air, or a puncture that needs repair, I'll tell you that instead of selling you a sensor.
Some systems need to be reset or re-learned by the car after a sensor is changed. Give me your registration and ask what's involved for your vehicle, and I'll tell you honestly what I can do on the spot.
Doing it with a tyre change
If you're having new tyres fitted, it makes sense to look at the valves and sensors at the same time, because the tyre is already off the wheel. Mention the warning light when you call and I'll bring the right parts.
What you can expect
- An honest answer about whether you need a sensor, a valve or just a tyre repair.
- A price and an arrival time before I set off.
- Payment by contactless card, bank transfer or payment link, with a VAT invoice on request.
Common questions
My tyre pressure light is on. Is the sensor broken?
Not necessarily. It could be a tyre that has lost pressure, a leaking valve or a faulty sensor. I'll check and tell you which it is.
Can you replace a TPMS sensor at my home?
Yes. I come to wherever the car is parked, as long as I can park the van safely and have room to work.
Is it safe to drive with the warning light on?
Check your tyre pressures first. If a tyre is low or flat, don't drive on it and call me. If the pressures are fine and the light stays on, get it looked at soon.
